Sup dah,

This week's been crazy man, I really think it has something to do with the moon.

So I hope you all would consider coming to this show on Saturday

It's going to be an awesome night of music. It all starts at 7, and it's going to be $10 but well worth it.
It starts with the lovely Juliet Piper who has an indie folk vibe. I'm listening to her on myspace and these tunes are really nice. After that we have experimental jam band Sheep's Wool who always put on a sick show. They sound completely different every time I see them so I'm excited to see what they do live this time. After that, Emerson, Wes and myself are playing with a group called Red & Purple with singer Jenna Maranga (ex-Waltz Reprise) and bassist Lex Da Silva (who fucking shreds and is also in Sheep's Wool)
Following that we have our good friends in Weight who play music along the lines of simple shoegaze 90's rock. Really great stuff. I never get tired of hearing "Crush on a Nun."
Next we have The Catch and Waves. I played with these dudes at a house party and they were the first band I thought of when I was booking this show. These guys fucking tore the house down, almost literally. They're a jazz fusion hip hop band with saxophones and an MC. The funny thing is they're all huge Meshuggah fans. Their drummer is amazing, he's also in that metal band Admiral Angry who I'm sure you've checked out. The rest of the dudes are jazz majors at CSUN. DEFINITELY check them out. They put on an amazing show.
Lastly, my other group BIG MOVES are closing up the show. We have a lot of genres going on...Indie rock with jazz chords, lots of anticipations, really dancey and heavy at points. Our new stuff is also getting more into the whole math rock genre along the lines of Tera Melos and Maps & Atlases but with that old BM spin on it.

Anyway, I hope you can all come to this show. It truly is a great lineup of music and you won't regret coming out. Also, it's my last chance to hang out with everyone before I leave for Japan the next morning. So what do you say? : )

Garbage

Last night we played a gig at The Cobalt.  It was real low key.  The crowd mainly consisted of our friends and fans.  The show went reasonably well with the exception of a few technical difficulties and of course the sound at this joint is not anything fucking extravagant by any means.  Something happened right after we played though that was kind of astonishing and shocked us all.  So there's this guy named Baron and he runs a record label called Mediaskare.  For whatever reason, he thought it would be a good idea to come up to us after the show in front of everyone and attempt to humiliate us by saying that our new music is "garbage."  At the time I was honestly so shocked that he said that, I didn't even know what to say.  I was in awe.  I still have so much to say about the whole thing, so I thought I'd finally put this blog to good use!

First off, I want to thank everyone who came up to us after the show and showed their support for us.  All of our friends, Theoria, Dead Alive, Stray From the Path.  They had nothing but kind and uplifting words for us after the whole incident and that was a beautiful thing.

On behalf of the band I want everyone to know that although what Baron said to us was humiliating and mean-spirited, we have in no way taken offense to what he said to us and are not mad about it.  At the time I was LIVID.  I was thinking to myself, who does this guy think he is?  He's a fucking bully.  What he said was completely unnecessary, unprofessional, and immature.  He's probably like 40 years old, he has a child and he's hanging out at the Cobalt talking shit to teenagers.  What a life.  How can Wes and I especially not take offense since this guy came up to us and called our art garbage.  But after thinking about it all last night and this morning, I don't feel that way.  I hold no hostility about it anymore.  This is why.

We're not writing music for the kids.  We don't care about getting big or myspace plays.  If we do get big and our music gets recognized, well that's ideal.  Everyone wants their art to be recognized.  But in the end, it's not why we're making music.  We've come to realize that we're doing this because it's what we love, and we're doing this for ourselves.  We don't care if you think our music is garbage because we love it and we're passionate about it.  Honestly, a lot of you probably just won't understand our new album.  There are a lot of experimental elements.  Our sound is rhythmically and harmonically more sophisticated than ever.  It seems like some people's ears can only handle as much harmony as a power chord.  For those of you who are open to other types of music besides tough guy hardcore, our album might be for you.  For those of you who are open minded to jazz, classical, fusion, Brazilian, thrash, shoegaze, metal and more, then Us & The Moon is worth giving a listen to.

One funny thing that Baron said to us last night - "I don't know who told you guys to start playing this shit, but it's garbage."  I found it amusing that he assumed that we rely on other people to tell us what to play.  Believe it or not, we don't let anyone tell us what to play and what not to play!  (On a side note-We also don't let anyone tell us who can or can't be in our band...)  I encourage all you musicians out there who are dedicated to your craft and to actually writing music with substance to keep doing what you're doing.  Don't EVER let anyone try and stomp on your music and tell you it's garbage.  Don't sacrifice your art for fame or a cheap record deal that won't even pay your rent.  John Coltrane was booed off stage when he had experimented with a new playing style in his final tour with Miles Davis in France.  Now he remains to be a legend in jazz composition and playing, and one of the pioneers of fusion.

Now instead of saying "fuck you" to Baron like I was thinking I should have last night, I now want to say thank you.  Thank you for giving us the motivation and drive to keep going in the direction we're headed in.  The more you hate our music, the better because we obviously have completely opposite perspectives in regards to what is art and what is garbage.

Keep it space,
Tay

"Jeru the Damaja"

Koko here. I have never really used blogs before but this website is getting on my good side. It's our band journal, and a handy tool for writers/artists/journalists/photogrophers.

Let's start off with stating the obvious, We are in recording for our first full length album being recorded by Farias Studios. Wes is nearly done with his guitar parts. We are getting alot of help from our close friends and constantly adding new elements into this record to make it sound very natual and fresh. We are a young band, but we feel this record is going to show and establish alot of maturity in our sound. There is alot going on, so that's why we are taking our sweet time. We plan on recording a live track for the record as well, which will be the album's instrumental track.

We are playing The Cobalt Cafe this Sunday with Stray from The Path and Theoria. We played with Stray at Kung Fu Fest last year. They were really nice and kind dudes and i remember we shared some cool talks. It's going to be cool seeing them again, they probably sound amazing live nowadays.

Taylor will be heading to Japan very soon for an amazing trip, I think he's coming back around early April. He is going to have an amazing time, no doubt. I love Japanese culture and art. The girlies are bomby-bomb too. We got another show for when Tay gets back, We are headlining The Cobalt cafe(Yeah!) with Fallen Figure april 11th. Theoria is showing support and opening for The Unborn on all of our booked shows, those guys are dope. I think Micheal and I need to work on our electronic stuff more often too.

PS - I think The Cinematic Orchestra has this effect on my mind which no other artist can create..."Kirwani" is all i hear right now.

I hope everyone gets to make it out Sunday night, There is a story that we need to tell. We are not alone. ...

Update 2 - DRUMS

It's now our third day tracking drums.  Emerson's really taking his time, but things are actually moving surprisingly fast.  We're now done with tracking for three whole songs - "Abduction," "Combat." and "Escape From Margiawes."
It's sounding awesome and let me tell you all something...and this is something to be excited about:
The drum tracks are going to be 100% real.  No quantizing.  We want our music to come off as real as possible, so we figured the only way to do it is to do it this way.  So as you might imagine, everything's taking a little bit longer, but it's going to be worth it.  Hey, maybe we'll start a trend...you never know.

More later.

Recording the album - DAY 1

It's day 1 and we just started tracking drums for "Us & The Moon," our first debut full length album. We expect to have drums done within the next few days. For all you friends out there who haven't heard about "Us & The Moon," here are some details on it. We're expecting to release it digitally sometime in April. Our game plan is to have tracking, mixing, and mastering done by the end of February, and then have a month in between to pitch it to labels and what not. We're actually looking to pitch it to a smaller indie label that could do more for us...A label that really cares about the music. If anyone has any connections, or knows anyone involved with a label like this, please give us a hand!
The album is being recorded at Farias Studios' in North Hollywood and is going to be produced, mixed, and mastered there by ourselves and of course ex-guitarist-still-kind-of-a-band-member-without-being-in-the-band, Daniel Braunstein. We'll also be getting some help from some of the guys who work at the studio.

"Us & The Moon" is going to be at least an hour of music based on a story about two human lovers abducted by aliens from the moon of "Margiawes," an overpopulated planet ruled by an evil empress named Mary. The story is told through the lyrics from the perspective of the humans as well as the instrumental music itself. It is a story of love, mystery, and war set in outer space. What else should you expect to be included in the story? Disco ball space crafts, a two dimensional cartoon planet ruled by basset hounds, a trip to the core of the earth, walking plant life, you know...the usual shit.

In other news, we're playing at The Whisky this month with Necro, the one and only death rapper. We're selling tickets. They're $25...That's probably the most expensive show we've ever played. Apparently people really like Necro, so they're willing to throw down that kind of money. That may not be you...I know it certainly isn't me (no offense, Necro) but it would still be great to see all you in the audience that night. We'll hang out after the show and drink tea or something. For more details on the show, please visit our myspace...MySpace.com/TheUnborn.

We're going to update this blog regularly from now on as we record the album and keep all you fans, friends, and homiedawgs updated on whatever we're doing in the studio or on the stage. We're really excited about this album and we hope to share our excitement with you through this blog.

Until next time, keep it space.
